The Westfjords won Lonely Planet’s ”Best in Travel” award in 2022 and it’s easy to see why.
Majestic mountains tower above bright blue fjords, while thrilling coastal roads take you from tiny fishing villages to bird-filled cliffs and stunning waterfalls.
Only a few people live in this remote area, far from the busier tourist trails. You can sit back safely and enjoy this unique road trip with our experienced guides, who know all the best sights to see!
After a pick-up from the capital, you’ll see sights on the Snæfellsnes peninsula, including the Gerðuberg cliffs, a pretty church at Rauðamelskirkja and a taste of local fishing traditions at the Bjarnarhöfn Shark Museum.
Then we’ll catch the ferry from Stykkishólmur across a beautiful fjord to the southern edge of the Westfjords, taking the coastal road to stay overnight in Patreksfjörður.
On the second day, get ready to see the picturesque cliffs at Látrabjarg, a perfect place for bird spotting, the colorful sandy beaches at Rauðasandur, and the epic falls of Dynjandi, the greatest waterfall in the area. We’ll spend the night in Ísafjörður, the capital of the Westfjords.
The third day takes us through seven fjords on the northern coast, stopping at scenic viewpoints where you can look for seals and whales and see the unspoiled wilderness of Hornstrandir.
On our way back to Reykjavík (arrival 8-9 pm), we’ll stop at Eiriksstaðir for a look at local Viking history.
It’ll be an unforgettable experience, seeing Iceland at its best!
